How We Know Jesus

Reason: The Mind of Christ

August 15, 2026Ryan Smallwood

1 Corinthians 2:10-16 Theme: Living faith uses critical thinking. Paul teaches that believers have received the Spirit, enabling them to discern spiritual truth. Reason, illuminated by the Spirit, helps us interpret Scripture faithfully and apply it wisely. Challenge: Engage culture without surrendering biblical conviction.

What is the Holy Spirit saying? Who do I need to share it with?

Apply

  • One of the greatest gifts God has given us is the ability to think and reason. Every day our minds are being shaped by something. Who or what is shaping your mind? What currently has the greatest influence on your thinking - Scripture, media, politics, relationships, work, social media, or something else?

  • Read 1 Corinthians 2:10–16. What words or phrases stand out to you? According to this passage, what does it mean to have "the mind of Christ"? What role does the Holy Spirit play in helping us understand and apply God's truth?

  • The sermon introduced the idea of prevenient grace - that God is at work in our lives before we even seek Him. Looking back on your own story, where can you now see God's hand drawing you to Himself before you fully trusted Christ?

  • Read John 16:13. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would "guide you into all the truth." What do you think that looks like in everyday life? How can we become more attentive to the Spirit's guidance?

  • Read Romans 12:1–2. Paul says we are transformed by the renewing of our minds. What are some influences that try to conform us to the patterns of this world? What is one practical step you can take this week to allow the Holy Spirit to renew your mind and help you think more like Christ?

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of our minds and for the Holy Spirit, who reveals Your truth and transforms our thinking. Renew our minds each day so that we may have the mind of Christ, discerning Your will and reflecting Jesus in all we think, say, and do. Amen.
