The Grandmas of Christmas

November 1, 2026Matthew 1:1-18Ryan Smallwood

On this All Saints Sunday we explore the genealogy of Jesus which highlights the often-overlooked women included in His family line. God’s grace works through unexpected people with complex and broken stories. Rather than presenting a polished or idealized lineage, the genealogy of Christ demonstrates that God intentionally weaves redemption through imperfect lives, including outsiders, the marginalized, and those with difficult pasts. Ultimately, this sermon shows that the birth of Jesus of Nazareth is rooted in a story of grace, inclusion, and divine purpose, reminding us that no life is beyond God’s redeeming work and that His plans often unfold through the most unlikely individuals

Listen

What is the Holy Spirit saying? Who do I need to share it with?

Apply

  1. Every family has a story! What is one funny, memorable, or meaningful tradition you inherited from your family?

  2. Read Matthew 1:1-18. Matthew begins the Christmas story with a genealogy rather than the familiar events surrounding Jesus’ birth. Why do you think it was important for Matthew to connect Jesus to the generations of people who came before Him?

  3. Notice the women in Jesus’ family tree – Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary. Which one stands out to you the most? What does her story teach you about God’s grace, redemption, or faithfulness?

  4. Who in your family tree would you honor today as someone who modeled God’s grace, demonstrated faithfulness, or helped shape your faith? What did their life teach you about following Jesus?

  5. One day, someone will remember you. What do you hope future generations will remember about the way you lived your faith and the impact you had on their lives?

Pray

Faithful God, thank you for the people who came before us. Help us honor those who shaped our lives. Show us whose lives we are shaping. May we continue to demonstrate your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
